Hummer and The Rubicon Trail Team Up For a Good Cause

For the second consecutive year, HUMMER supports Friends of the Rubicon (FOTR), with a $5,000 donation to provide materials, food and tools for the hundreds of volunteers who work with the organization to maintain the Rubicon. Friends of the Rubicon is an informal coalition of groups and individuals dedicated to keeping the one of the world's most famous off road destinations, the Rubicon Trail open and available to off roaders.

"HUMMER has proven itself to be a significant partner in keeping the Rubicon Trail alive and well, says Del Albright, Friends of the Rubicon founder and trail boss." Albright, who has led FOTR for seven years through his affiliation with the BlueRibbon Coalition (www.sharetrails.org) said that HUMMER has supported the organization like no other manufacturer.

In 2006, HUMMER became the first and only automotive manufacturer to support Friends of the Rubicon. "The Rubicon Trail is extremely important to HUMMER. Our owners use it for recreation, while HUMMER engineers use the trail to test the capabilities of our products," says Martin Walsh, HUMMER General Manager. "It is our responsibility to ensure the future of off roading remains a viable hobby for off road enthusiasts around the globe."

In addition to supporting FOTR, HUMMER actively promotes organizations that promote environmental education and trail restoration. HUMMER provides each new owner with a one year membership to Tread Lightly!, a national nonprofit educational organization whose mission is to empower generations to enjoy the outdoors responsibly.

Every owner who attends the HUMMER Driving Academy receives membership to the BlueRibbon Coalition, a national coalition of organizations, businesses and individuals committed to promoting responsible public land use. In October 2003, HUMMER provided a $100,000 endowment to Tread Lightly! to launch the HUMMER Helps program.

The endowment is administered as a grant giving initiative to select outdoor enthusiast clubs who are Tread Lightly! members and have pinpointed recreational areas in need. The HUMMER Helps program was created to sustain the lands where outdoor enthusiasts enjoy off highway activities. In August 2005, HUMMER donated nearly $13,000 to a Tread Lightly! rehabilitation project at the Bald Mountain off highway vehicle (OHV) trail in the Sierra National Forest, Fresno, CA.

Kia Rondo SX Concept

The concept car is based on the Kia Rondo unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November last year. The new concept vehicle is the realization of Kia of their “Exciting and Enabling” brand direction. “We have positioned the all new 2007 Rondo as a vehicle of function and versatility,” Len Hunt said.

Hunt is the executive vice president and COO of Kia Motors America. “The Rondo SX Concept is proof that smart, spacious vehicles don’t need to be boring, and that consumers can still be passionate about a daily driver,” Hunt added further. The concept car uses design elements that are employed by the current Kia SX models.

The aggressive looking front and rear fascias are just some of the design characteristics that are being used by Kia models like the Rio and the Spectra. Aside from that, the concept crossover vehicle also employs sportier grill inserts. The addition of such design increases the aesthetic value of the vehicle. To make the SX concept of the Rondo more aerodynamic, the roof rails present on other trim package of the Rondo were nowhere to be seen on the concept vehicle.

The absence of the roof rails decreased dramatically the coefficient of drag of the vehicle. The door handles and side moldings are finished in contrasting colors which gives the car a soft and fashionable overall finish. The Kia Rondo SX Concept also comes with an accessory body kit which is also available on the other trim packages of the Rondo. The interior of the concept vehicle exudes a sports car luxurious feel, thanks to the materials used and the finishes utilized.

The black leather that wraps the steering wheel which is common on SX trim packages of other Kia models is also present in the Kia Rondo SX Concept. The seats, meanwhile, are upholstered in grey leather with red leather trimmings around the grey Alcantara inserts. Stainless steel sports pedals are employed by the SX concept and this departs from the black theme that the current Rondo models use on their brake pedals. The center stack, shifter surround, and the door switch trims are characterized by an accented platinum look.

However in terms of showroom success, the Commander is unlikely to cause much concern to its arch nemesis the Land Rover Discovery. Land Rover expects to sell around 12,000 Discos a year, while Jeep's modest plans involve shifting only 600 examples of its seven seat Colossus. Put another way, Jeep's annual target is less than Land Rover expects to sell in around three weeks.

Oh well, never mind that because the Commander can play its trump card of wait for it, a 330bhp, 5.7 liter V8 engine which gives a 0-60mph sprint time of 7.5 seconds and maximum speed of 127mph which is highly respectable for a vehicle that weighs in at around 2,400kg. Environmental concerns may deter a lot of buyers these days not to mention average fuel returns of 16mpg from Chrysler's renowned HEMI V8 power plant.

This can also be found in the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT and the awesome Chrysler 300C.

The big Jeep's cunning solution is to use a Multi Displacement System (MDS), which cuts off four of the eight cylinders at cruising speed, but in all honesty this does little to quench the Commander's insatiable thirst.

Because of this, Jeep estimates that the alternative 215bhp 3.0 liter turbo diesel engine will account for around 85 per cent of new sales.

Owners of this model are likely to see their fuel consumption creep to as high as 25 mpg on a motorway run. This may offer some comfort as diesel fuel prices seem to be heading down again. Ride quality at any speed is excellent yet as a 4x4, the Commander feels neither quick nor comfortable being thrown around country lanes.

Jeep says it will adjust the set up for European roads, but the Commander has some way to go before matching the all round ability of the all conquering Land Rover Disco. Its squared off, no nonsense styling may not be to everyone's liking, either. Inside, exposed metal Allen bolts will be too macho for some as will the visible bolts around the lights and wheel arches.

I must confess I am rather curious as to why some manufacturers started this trend, I understand it is primarily to convey ruggedness but to me it just looks like some bloke has stuck them on in his garage. Also the interior plastics aren't what I would expect from a car in this price range. There are some neat touches, though, such as the roof mounted drop down DVD player, easy to use folding seats, twin sunroofs and carry hooks.

But some other practical features let the Commander down a little. The middle row of seats is surprisingly tight on legroom and the third row is strictly for children or very short people only. The individual ventilation and temperature controls are a nice feature though and will stop the usual arguments between middle and back seat passengers about being too hot or too cold especially amongst kids.

Ford Flex 2009

Aside from the Mustang and F-150, Ford's model lineup has been undistinguished. The Flex has fixed that. First shown at the New York International Auto Show, it was transformed from the Fairlane concept into the production 2009 Flex. The 6 or 7 passenger wagon has attracted a lot of attention with its form follows function styling it's somewhat polarizing, but I like it. The Flex has no off road aspirations so it has only modest ground clearance and 18 in. wheels.

Although it's produced on the same assembly line as the Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX in the Oakville, Ontario, plant in Canada, it's actually built on the unit body of a Taurus X, albeit one stretched 5 in. That means standard front wheel drive and optional all wheel drive with the handling characteristics of a big sedan. We have lauded the driveability of the Taurus X, just not its styling.

The Flex does it right and gives all the rear passengers plenty of space. This isn't a tough, in your face type of vehicle, but it has a lot of character.

The type that makes owners proud to be seen with it even when it's packed with kids and soccer balls. The cool styling and intelligently designed interior give the Flex enough class to be more than a people hauler.

Sure, the base model the $28,295 SE with a monochromatic color scheme, 18 in. painted wheels, cloth interior and fwd is perfect for the large family on a budget, but most buyers will opt for the $32,070 SEL that adds some exterior chrome, heated leather front seats, climate control and wood trim. Enough luxury and comfort are in the SEL Flex that it wouldn't be inappropriate to use it to transport business clients. Take the big step to the $36,555 Limited and get 19 in. wheels (which still seem a little small) as well as adjustable pedals, Sync voice activation, a 110 volt power inverter, a power liftgate and myriad other detail changes. Except for the base SE model, awd is available for roughly $1850 extra. I had the opportunity to drive a $43,250 Limited AWD model.

Options included the Vista roof, which provides overhead glass panels; a navigation system with the new Sirius Travel Link system that can show weather data and local gas prices and incorporates a backup camera as well as my favorite option, a $760 refrigerator. It's big enough to hold six soda cans and it's not cooled by an air conditioning vent, but by a Waeco compressor unit that is also used by Maybach. It all adds up to a pleasant, practical, stylish package that keeps getting better.

Rather than having a fuel guzzling big V-8, it's offered only with the 3.5 liter 24 valve Duratec V-6 making 262 bhp and 248 lb.ft. of torque. Not enough to feel fast, but with the 6 speed automatic it works smoothly and the Flex can tow 4500 lb. That's quite a feat as it drives like a sedan. It's remarkably quiet, with a well controlled ride, yet has the steering response of a much smaller car. Maybe it's the big anti roll bars that do it for me, but the Flex didn't put a foot wrong on the narrow back roads where I expected such a spacious vehicle to require more driver concentration.

I doubt many other 7 passenger vehicles could keep pace, at least not in this price range. The automatic transmission was particularly nice. Instead of an overdrive off button, there is a mode selector that enables a bit more engine braking. Good for those back roads, where you don't want to constantly be using the brake pedal, or on downhill stretches where a little engine braking would be helpful.

Although 0–60 is somewhere in the 9 second range, I'd own one. It wouldn't supplant my needs for a sports car, but as a practical big car one that will carry three generations of the family and tow my race car, all while achieving close to 20 mpg.

The Clio is one of the most successful models in the Renault range. It is one of the top vehicles in the European market when it comes to comfort and safety. K&N has released a new performance air intake kit (57A-6010) for the Renault Clio.

GT-R subject to a price rise in the US. Another day, another GT-R story, it seems you just can’t avoid this car at the moment.

Today we hear that Nissan USA has announced a $7,000 increase for the new GT-R.

Nissan claims the increases are due to higher costs for raw materials. The increases see the base model increase from $69,850 to $76,840, an increase of $6,990.

The GT-R Premium has been increased by $7,190 to $79,090. Nissan USA say that the new prices do not affect buyers who have placed orders with deposits prior to September 5th.

CAMARO SS V8

GM has quietly released the first official picture of the top of the range 2010 Camaro SS on its media website.

The SS will have a 6.2 liter V8 and comes with either a 6 speeds automatic or 6 speeds manual gearbox.

The manual is mated to GM’s 6.2 LS3 motor, which generates 422bhp and 408lb ft of torque.

The auto gets the trick L99 6.2 V8, which is based on the LS3 but includes GM’s fuel saving Active Fuel Management feature that enables the engine to run on only four cylinders, making it more fuel efficient. This engine pumps out around 400bhp and GM estimates 23 mpg during motorway driving.

The Ferrari F430 Scuderia is currently the most focussed Ferrari available offering more power, and less weight than the 'standard' F430.

Even the mighty Enzo had to bow down after the 430 Scud beat it's time around the Ferrari test track. Now we hear unconfirmed rumours that a Spider is planned for late 2008, with production limited to around 300 vehicles.

A test mule has been spotted with Scuderia wheels and badges so it seems likely the rumours are true. But if you are anything like us, this will seem a little odd.

Firstly, won't the fact that the roof is being removed mean some strengthening will need to be added, therefore increasing the weight. The Scuderia was created to be lightweight, that's the point? Secondly, for a track focussed car the rigidity offered by a coupe surely has to be preferred? Be in no doubt that there will be a market for this car, and while the rumours are unconfirmed, with a launch planned for late this year an official announcement will have to be made very soon.

If You Park in an Attended Lot, Leave Only the Ignition/Door Key. If your trunk and glove box use the same key as the door, have one of them changed. Don't give the attendant easy access to your glove box and trunk. Upon returning, check the tires, spare tire, and battery to be sure they are the same as those you had when you parked.

Joe Nolan is the IIHS’ senior vice president on the results he disclosed, “Combined with test results released last year, consumers now have 9 middle size, moderately priced SUV models that earn our Top Safety Pick designation.

All of the SUV's in this group have ESC, and all but the Wrangler have standard side airbags. Ford Fiesta will hit dealerships in Europe this year. Next year, it will be offered in China and Asia-Pacific. The Fiesta will arrive in North America and the rest of Ford markets around the globe by 2010.

Ford will build the new subcompact at its Cologne plant from August and in Valencia from 2009. The maker of iconic cars such as Ford Taurus, Mustang, F-Series, will be modify the Fiesta varied regional markets.

The original Fiesta, which the automaker produced during the first oil crisis, has sold over 12 million units since 1976. Eventually, Ford stopped selling the Fiesta in America in 1980. This is why the automaker disparaged in the past for missing great opportunities.

Japanese automaker Mazda announced recently that it will be testing the Mazda ASV-4 in public shortly. The said vehicle is designed by the automaker loaded with safety features pursuant to the Japanese government's call for the creation of vehicles which would reduce traffic accidents.

According to the automaker, vehicle to vehicle communication will be able to reduce traffic accidents caused by driver error. Mazda plans to conduct tests on two vehicle blind collision avoidance shortly. Thereafter, the automaker will be testing the right turn and rear end crash avoidance systems. Apart from warning the driver, said systems are also designed to take over braking when needed. The first three phases of testing the vehicles has resulted to Mazda developing a safety feature which warns the driver if a speeding vehicle from the rear.

Worn spark plugs. A vehicle can have either four, six or eight spark plugs which fire as many as 3 million times every 1,000 miles, resulting in a lot of heat and electrical and chemical erosion. A dirty spark plug causes misfiring, which wastes fuel. Spark plugs need to be replaced regularly.

Dirty air filters. An air filter that is clogged with dirt, dust and bugs chokes off the air and creates a "rich" mixture too much gas being burned for the amount of air, which wastes gas and causes the engine to lose power. Replacing a clogged air filter can improve gas mileage by as much as 10 percent, saving about 15 cents per gallon.

Don't be an aggressive driver. Aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by as much as 33 percent on the highway and 5 percent on city streets, which wastes 7 cents to 49 cents per gallon.

The high tech offers of the 2009 Ford F-150 include a broadband capable in dash computer, Tool Link tracking system that has embedded radio frequency identification (RFID) capabilities for logging tools and inventory on the truck and Crew Chief, a telematics and diagnostics system. These features are expected to be available in Ford’s new vehicles in the fall.

The truck’s built in computer, powered by Microsoft Auto, is located in the middle of the dashboard. It offers a 6.5 inch touch screen, 2GB of memory capable of entertaining expansion, and a USB port. The Tool Link feature lets users mark their tools with RFID tags. When the tools are not returned to the pickup boxes, the computer flashes a warning on the computer screen.

“It helps contractors and tradespeople guarantee they show up at the job site with the right tools for each job and that they don’t leave equipment behind,” said William Frykman, the automaker’s product development manager. Additionally, the computer also tells fleet managers precisely where the truck is. This is an effort to make easier truckers work. The system also features an 8-foot steel cable used to avoid auto theft.

The new F-150 truck offers V-8 engines ranging from a 4.6 liter to a 5.4 liter engine which can run on E85. The truck is also equipped with either a four speed or a six speed automatic transmission to bolster performance and handling.

Tesla to make gas-electric car

Tesla Motors, the people who put the all-electric car on the map, are going to work with gas too.

The San Carlos, Calif.-based company will produce two basic types of its Whitestar sedan, due toward the end of 2009. One will run completely on batteries. The other will be a range-extended vehicle, or REV, CEO Ze'ev Drori said in an interview. In an REV, a small gas motor recharges the battery pack while the car is being driven. The battery pack on these types of cars only goes about 40 to 50 miles on a charge, but because it gets recharged while driving, the range of these cars will be longer.

"It is more than research. We intend to have it as part of the offering," Drori said. "The Whitestar can be all-electric or it can be an REV."

The idea behind coming out with an REV is to reach prospective buyers who are worried about range, said Elon Musk, Tesla's chairman. (Drori and Musk were holding a press conference at corporate headquarters to mark the delivery of the first commercial version of the Tesla Roadster. Musk owns it.). The all-electric version of Whitestar is expected to go for 150 to 200 miles on a charge.

If the competition is an indication, the REV version of Whitestar will go much further. GM was the first major car company to tout REVs with its Chevy Volt, due around 2010. The Volt is expected to go around 400 miles before completely conking.

Range has been one of the historical problems with electric cars. The distance an electric car can drive is controlled by the size and performance of its battery pack. The Tesla Roadster, coming out this year, can go more than 200 miles on a charge, but it costs $98,000. GM's fated EV1 only went 80 or so miles on a charge, CEO Rick Wagoner said in a recent interview.

The gas-electric version of Whitestar will cost a little less than the all-electric version, Musk added, but the difference will be fairly minimal. Building a gas-electric isn't cheap. Automakers have to insert generators. The battery pack also requires different cells.

Whitestar is expected to sell in the $50,000 to $70,000 range, depending on the configuration (some of the all-electric cars will have bigger batteries than others and vary in price, for instance). The car will likely compete against luxury sedans from companies like BMW. Later, Tesla will also come out with an economy car, Musk said.

Still, the REV concept can be used to lower prices. GM wants to sell the Volt for around $30,000. The Volt is expected to go 400 miles before completely conking out.

Tesla has hinted that it might go the REV direction. As reported earlier, Tesla executives complimented the design of the Volt, calling it elegant, back in December. At that time, however, executives only said that Tesla was looking at all options.

Side Assist blind spot detection is a bargain at $500, although the Q7 is a premium SUV, starting at $50,620 and stretching into the high sixties. Active above 30 mph, Side Assist senses cars coming up on your left or right. When they come within the critical blind spot area, LEDs illuminate along the inside edge of the side mirrors.

The multimedia interface, or MMI, is a cockpit controller like the BMW iDrive but with an important difference. It's easy to use. June production of the Q7 (arriving late summer) will add adaptive cruise control (ACC) and emergency braking. The Audi version of ACC, a $2,100 option, maintains following distances of 1.3 to 2.0 seconds, about six to nine car lengths at 60 mph.

The V-8 powered Q7 contains other thoughtful Audi technologies: standard Bluetooth, the scroll wheels on the steering wheel for audio volume and channel or track selection, and the 12-speaker Bose stereo system. And most Q7 models will get steerable Xenon headlights.

Buick Lucerne CXS

To use the system, you just press the On Star button and tell the operator where you want to go. The route you need is downloaded, and then voice prompts (plus a one line dish display) synchronize with OnStar's embedded GPS module to talk you through the navigation.

You can also opt for dashboard LCD navigation. Tech fans should steer toward the upscale Lucerne CXS, with a Northstar V-8 engine, stability control, and magnetic ride control shock absorbers (whose charged iron particle filling can go from soft to firm and back to soft, instantly).

The CD plays MP3s, a line in jack comes standard, and XM Satellite Radio is a low cost option. The quiet, front wheel drive Lucerne makes a good replacement for the old fashioned Buick Park Avenue and LeSabre and reasonable competition for the Toyota Avalon or Lexus ES 330.

Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT

Subaru keeps pace with technology in the cockpit, though it breaks no new ground beyond the SI-Drive. The center stack (the console area between the driver and front seat passenger) holds a Kenwood navigation system ($2,000), climate controls, and a six disc CD changer.

The 2007 models have SRS WOW surround sound capabilities with MP3 and WMA playback, plus rewiring for XM Satellite Radio. There's a line in jack for music players but no option for direct control of iPods. And there is no Bluetooth option for U.S. models.

I am a city boy, born and bred. Early on, my parents moved to New York, and while growing up, all I knew were skyscrapers, traffic and noise. I always felt comforted to be surrounded by the masses and I knew anything I would ever want or need would be found close at hand.

The management and several departments all flew out to a secluded area in the forest. On the first day of the trip we had to practice falling backwards and into the arms of a co-worker as a trust building exercise.

Later, we put on war paint and chanted “Efficiency, Productivity, Profitability” over and over while dancing around a fire. We swung across rivers and ate bugs and listened to motivational pep talks.

I was completely sick of the experience and decided to walk around for a while to clear my head. When everyone was busy I snuck away from the group and went into the woods, despite warnings I had heard about the dreaded Sasquatch.

I wandered around randomly, feeling sorry for myself. I greatly missed my city and my old life with all its pollution, sirens and plumbing. There had to be a way to get out, but how?

I looked up and came face to face with the Sasquatch! He looked just like Chewbacca and was covered with mud and twigs. I screamed and turned to run.

“Wait friend,” said the beast, “You have nothing to fear.”

Shocked, I turned and contemplated the hairy monster, which had its arms outstretched and a kind smile on its muzzle. It turned out that the Sasquatch was actually a guy named Harold. He had worked for a large corporation, and like me, had been brought out to the woods for a back to nature trip.

Somehow he had gotten separated from the group and became hopelessly lost. He had thus begun his new life in the woods, foraging and trying his best to survive. He had also somehow grown a thick fur covering, but I didn’t have the time to question him how.

"In the short term, it will continue to be Europe primarily Western Europe that will provide almost one half of the growth in demand for diesel light vehicles globally," said Bedwell.

"While this remains a very significant portion, it is worth bearing in mind that average growth in Europe during the past four years was 62 percent. We are now entering a period when Europe will become less critical as a driver of growth in global diesel light vehicle demand.

In terms of absolute demand, however, Europe will still remain the most dominant region throughout the next decade," he continued.

In the past, diesel vehicles have been shunned in North America. The diesel engines of the 70s ruined the reputation of diesel engines in general. With its loud operating noise, and black soot for emission, Americans have stayed away from diesel engines.

But with diesel significantly less expensive than gasoline and cleaner diesel engine now available, Americans are expected to change their view of these engines which can work will with standard auto parts like Nissan 240Z radiators.

Depending on what country and or state you live in there will be differing rules and regulations for riding these great little bikes.
